Meet Mrs. Wilson

The newest teacher here at PS4 is Mrs. Wilson! Mrs. Wilson teaches Class 501 and is very excited to begin teaching here at The Duke Ellington School. "Everything is going well so far", says Mrs. Wilson, a Harlem native who still lives in the historic neighborhood. When asked about her teaching philosophy, Mrs. Wilson states, "I support a quality education for all children. I believe in getting to know all of my students well". The one thing that she would like for all of her students to come away with this year is for them to be independent thinkers and learners. With all the resources available to them in this age of technology, Mrs. Wilson wants her students to use the research skills they will learn this year to continue. "One of my hopes as an educator", she says, "is to instill a love of learning in my students". Mrs. Wilson is very committed to providing a learning environment that is exciting! She promises to treat her students with the utmost respect. Welcome to PS4, Mrs. Wilson!

Meet the Assistant Principals: Ms. Martin

As we continue to learn about the talented staff of PS4, the editors of The Duke Ellington Express wanted to highlight the leadership of our wonderful school by sharing a few pieces of information about our assistant principals. This week, it's all about Ms. Martin!

Did you know that Ms. Martin was born in Cuba? Her family moved to this country when she was three years old. She lived in Hoboken, New Jersey with her aunt and then moved to the Bronx. Ms. Martin is married and has a daughter who attends Syracuse University.

Ms. Martin has always wanted to be a teacher. "My Mom was my role model", she says,"she inspired me to go into teaching". After attending Hunter College, she went to Adelphi University and the College of St. Rose to become an assistant principal. "I love being an assistant principal", she says,"because even on my worst day, the students make me happy".

So, what does Ms. Martin do when she's not working? "My most memorable vacation was to Turks and Caicos, but my favorite vacation spot is the Dominican Republic". "The people [of both countries] are so friendly".

Now, you know a little bit more about Ms. Martin and Mr. Polubiec! Next up...Mr. Batiz!

Meet Our New Teacher

Ms. Schulman came from a world much different than the other teachers the work at P.S. 4, "I used to work for MTV. I planned the MTV Video Music Awards and other events that millions of people have seen on national television" Ms. Schulman was born and raised on Long Island. While she works here, she also is attending Hunter College in pursuit of her Masters Degree in Education. What was the reason that caused her to enter the teaching profession? "I wanted new challenges. I thought that teaching would be a good way for me to challenge myself and the students that I teach." Ms. Schulman loves teaching even though she finds organizing difficult at times. "The toughest part of the job so far has been organizing papers, students' work and different memos that we get from the administration." Ms. Schulman currently works with Mr. Wright in class 520. She says he has been extremely helpful to her as she adjusts to her new line of work, "he's been great in helping me learn how to be a good teacher and work with all the different types of students that we have in our class." Welcome to PS4, Ms. Schulman!

Meet Our New Teachers

Boys and girls, meet Ms. McCoy, one of our new teachers this year at P.S. 4. She is working with Mr. Allman in Class 420.
Ms. McCoy was born in The Bronx and now resides in the Harlem/Washington Heights area. Before becoming a teacher, Ms. McCoy practiced law. That's right boys and girls, Ms. McCoy is also a lawyer! She earned her law degree from Seton Hall University. She is very excited about her new job educating fourth grade students and working alongside Mr. Allman in Class 420. Ms McCoy hopes that her past can serve as a guide for her students' future. "I want students to see that the world is a much bigger place than the block that they live on. I want them to go places outside their environment and travel the world.                                                                                     That way they can truly expand their horizons."
We wish Ms. McCoy a wonderful new school                                                                                           year.
