PS4's French & African Dance Club Goes To The United Nations!

Members of PS4's French and African Dance Club at the City Council's Committee on Cultural Affairs, Council Chambers.

The NYC City Council’s Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries and International Intergroup Relations held a meeting on Monday, April 29, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. in the Council Chambers, City Hall, New York, NY regarding the Cultural After School Adventures (CASA) Initiative: Bringing Arts & Culture To New York City Public School and Enriching The Lives Of Students. PS4's French and African Dance Club was invited!  The meeting brought members of the staff as well as students who are active participants in the CASA programming, like our French and African Dance Club.  Most exciting, was that students were asked to perform in front of the Council Members!

On March 18, our scholars were also invited to perform at the United Nations! This particular event was held to celebrate women and girls around the world. Congratulations to the members of the French and African Dance Club.  Special thanks to instructor Assetou Sy for exposing our scholars to great experiences and to Ms. Martin (Assistant Principal) for taking the following photos!

Line Leaders Club

Principal White with line leaders from each class.

"All line leaders must be respectful, they must be brave and they must have good listening skills", said Principal White at a recent meeting and with fifty students who have been given a very important role by their teacher.  Each student received a Principal's Award certificate and a pen for their focus and dedication to leading their class through the hallways each day.  Ms. White encouraged them to keep up thier great work and asked them to think about ways to better lead.  "Think of ways that you can do your job better", she told them.  "At our next meeting, I want to hear from you".

Congratulations to our line leaders!  Keep up the good work!

Ellington Artists Do Some Landscaping

Twelve students from the 5th grade have signed up to be part of a club called the Ellington Artists! With creative direction from Carol Ward, Education Coordinator at Morris-Jumel Mansion, this talented group will learn about styles of art and artistic terms. On Wednesday, October 14th, the group walked over to the mansion to learn about impressionism. They used sponges, paint brushes, paint and a small canvas to create an art piece inspired by the landscape of Washington Heights once enjoyed by our nation's first president, George Washington! They were encouraged to "find a spot that shouts 'paint me, paint me", says Ms. Lennon, librarian and club organizer. "It's realistic!", says Adja C. (student from class 501).

Each week students will meet to develop their artistic skills and learn about famous artists, like Frida Kahlo. To see the artwork created by the Ellington Artists, visit the library on the 4th floor. Their next art lesson at the mansion will be on November 17th.
