Winter Clothing Drive

Members of the Student Government hold up coats collected during our Winter Clothing Drive.

Congratulations to the members of the Student Government Organization who had a successful Winter Clothing Drive!  For two months, PS4 collected winter coats, hats, sweaters, scarves and mittens in the school's lobby!  We worked with One Warm Coat to collect clean, and gently used warm coats to support the coat drive program.

One Warm Coat is a national non-profit organization that works to provide a free, warm coat to any person in need and raises awareness of the vital need for warm coats. One Warm Coat supports individuals, groups, companies and organizations across the country by providing the tools and resources needed to hold a successful coat drive. Coats are distributed in the communities where they were collected, to any person in need, without charge, discrimination or obligation. Since its inception in 1992, One Warm Coat has worked with its volunteers to give away over 4 million coats.  For more information, go to www.onewarmcoat.org

All donated coats were given to a Little Sisters of the Assumption, a non-profit organization in East Harlem that supports new-immigrant families.  In addition to their eight core program areas, LSA offers additional support services, including mental health counseling, support groups, and nutrition and fitness classes.  Click here to read about Little Sisters.

On February 28, this local organization was able to pick up 18 coats from PS4 donors and 12 bags of winter clothes!  This successful service learning project not only connected the traditional classroom experience with real life lessons, but also allowed students to learn ways to support their own community.
