PS4 Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

From September 15-October 15, American recognizes the contributions, culture, and heritage of Hispanic Americans.  This month-long celebration began on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Hispanic countries; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  Mexico achieved independence on September 16 while Chile gained independence on September 18th.  The celebration extends into October to mark "El Dia de la Raza", or "The Day of the Race" on October 12.  "El Dia de la Raza" is observed throughout most of Mexico and Latin America

At PS4, students in all grades will be given opportunities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month during the month of October.  Kindergarten and 1st grade students will be visiting the Washington Heights Public Library to hear stories Hispanic authors.  Students in 3rd and 4th grade will be encouraged to participate in our Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest.  5th grade students will participate in a Latin Jazz workshop and take a trip to Hostos Community College to hear live Latin jazz!
